"My Life In Management" Dept.:
The building landlord just dropped off a batch of cheques that my predecessor had written for our rent.
My landlord looks almost exactly like this guy:
 Yeah, that's Mel Brooks...
Thing is, I think he'd be flattered to hear that.
Heigh Ho!

Shudder Again: 22 Tales of Sex and Horror, ed. By Michele Slung. Roc, 1993
Tales of sex and horror? What could be better? They are, after all, two of my favorite things. But sadly most of the stories didn’t really make me feel either horrified or like I’d read erotica. Most of the stories are good and interesting, but not really moving. There are a couple of exceptions: the creepy build up in ‘Mr. Wrong’ had me going “Don’t drive the car!!!!!”, and ‘Again’ filled me with such horror- probably one of the scariest stories I’ve read- and then, at the end, such laughter that it’s easily the best of the bunch. And, oddly, it’s by Ramsey Campbell, a writer who’s novels I haven’t much cared for. All in all, not exceptional horror, but many of the stories are very *odd* and worth reading for that.emotional input: gloomy

I need to grow some balls with this guy.

This guy is an almost every day patron. Every day that I'm here (3 days a week), he's here from open to close, with his laptop and cell phone. Cell phone, you say? "But, moongirli," you say, "cell phones aren't allowed in the library!"
Darn right they're not. However, aside of an ill-placed "No cellphones" graphic (no words, just a graphic) on the sliding door out front, we have no indications of this rule. Now, as librarians go, I'm pretty liberal about kicking people out. I work it the same way I worked substitute teaching: You get one warning, with me telling you what you did wrong, letting you know the rule, letting you know I can and will kick you out for it. Then I will come by a second time, and remind you you're doing something wrong. If I need to come back a third time, you are outta here. [this is 3 times in one day; I figure everybody -should- get a clean slate every day, but this guy, well, I'm reconsidering...]
So, this fella, thinks he's smooth (ergo, I will call him Smooth Dude), and I have had several run-ins re: his precious phone.
[About 1 month ago] Smooth Dude: *on cell* blah blah blah blah blah. Me: 'Scuse me, sir? You're not allowed to use the cell phone in the library. SD: I'm not? Since when? Me: Since always, sir. You cannot use it because it disturbs other patrons. SD: I've -always- used it in here. Me: Sorry, sir. Library policy. *walks off*
[About 2 weeks ago] Smooth Dude: *on cell* blah blah blah blah blah. Me: Sir, I've spoken to you about this. You cannot use the cell phone in the library. You have to take it out into the atrium *pointing, just in case he doesn't get it* SD: Why should I trouble myself to walk all the way to the front of the building when I'm already on the phone? Me: It's library policy, sir. You can ask them to wait while you walk up there, or you can tell them you'll call them back. SD: That's ridiculous. Me: I'm sorry, sir. Library policy. *walks away*
[Later that same day] Smooth Dude: *on cell* blah blah blah blah blah. Me: *with an "I can't BELIEVE he doesn't GET IT" expression to co-worker.* Sir, I've spoken to you about this once today. You cannot use the cell phone in the library. Smooth Dude: *on cell* blah blah blah blah blah. *paying no mind to me* Me: You know I -can- ask you to leave if you continue this, sir. *walks away*
Now, he actually did me a solid a week ago and helped me to understand what another patron was asking for. The patron didn't speak English very well, and I had no clue. Smooth Dude somehow knew what he wanted. So I gave him a pass for a few days.
This morning, how about no.
[This morning] Note: SD has switched desks, to a place where I cannot see him from the desk. I'm pretty sure this is because he thinks if I can't see him, he's not going to get in trouble.
Smooth Dude: *on cell* blah blah blah blah blah. Me: *looking for him... found him, by the windows.* Sir, I've spoken to you about this numerous times before. You cannot have the cell--- SD: *cuts me off* It's my voice mail! Me: I heard you talking, sir. SD: The microphone, on my computer! Me: Then you need to take it into one of the study rooms, or outside in the atrium. If I can hear you at the desk, you're too loud. Thank you! *walking away* SD: *mutter mutter* Well, what about when YOU'RE TOO LOUD on YOUR PHONE, huh?!
I should have booted his ass right there and then... *grumble* Seriously, since when is using the Pee Wee Herman defense (I know you are, but what am I?) a valid way to be an asshole?emotional input: aggravated

Haven't been reading much lately. I am on the YA book bent, so expect a gigantic list of those soon (they are all short and take me a train ride or two to finish). I just don't feel like reading. It happens. I've been mostly brushing up on my Japanese and playing games. Got my rogue to 70 in WoW and got her nice weapons.
Market visit today will yield beets, tomatoes, chard, garlic, carrots, and whatever else that looks nummy. I am making some pasta-stuffed tomatoes and risotto-stuffed chard on the weekend (New York Times had awesome recipes in its dining section yesterday).

Title - Nice New Curves Author - laurab1 Characters/pairings – Ten, Eleven, Doctor/TARDIS, Jack/Eleven Rating – PG-13/12 Length – 480 words Spoilers – to DW 4.13 Journey's End Summary – A slight mishap with a regeneration (I'm sure you can work it out, from the title ;) ) Disclaimer - alas, none of these people are mine Feedback is loved and appreciated :) Enjoy!
"That’s weird," he said, in the same tone of voice he’d used for weirdness over new teeth. Except, this time, it came out rather higher. At least the accent was roughly the same, maybe a little more BBC English. |

My husband complains almost constantly to me about what this or that person did or what a pile of crap this or that piece of equipment is or whatever.
My father-in-law does the same. His girlfriend has been gone for almost two months now, so he complains to me.
My brother-in-law has started doing the same. I don’t know; maybe I look like a willing listener or something.
But you know what? My life isn’t exactly a bowl of cherries, either. I’d love for just 24 hours to go by- just one day! Without listening to people complaining!!! Especially when it’s about the same things over and over again. I have these vision of myself just standing there screaming “STFU!!!!” for about an hour straight.

Do we ever get an idea of how long Rose has been in the parallel universe before "Turn Left"? I know that a few months on the Doctor and Rose's part was over a year (2?) for Mickey, so was there an indication of how much time had passed? |

British crime writer John Creasey

The 1960s TV series The Baron is currently screening here on late-night commercial TV. It was based on a series of books by the British crime writer John Creasey, an author who apparently had no less than 562 published books to his credit! None of which I’ve read.
Has anyone read any of this writer’s work? Is it worth chasing up?
I believe that another 1960s British TV series, Gideon’s Way, was also based on books by Creasey.
